Industry Use Cases

• maintain schema for PWLS meta data
• administer PWLS industry data
• review company data classifications

Company Dictionary Administration Use Cases

• submit complete data set (initial or replacement)
• submit incremental addition
• submit change including change to or deletion of existing items

End User Use Cases

• user has well log data which he wants to understand or classify in terms of an industry-defined vocabulary.

  1. interpret service description from actual service header
    1.1. match to name of well_log_service_class
    1.2. find well_log_tool_class
  2. get tool series designation from actual equipment header
    2.1. match to name of well_log_tool_series
    2.2. find well_log_service_class
    2.3. find company_channel_class for the service
  3. get channel mnemonics from actual logging pass header

• User has criteria for well log data which he would like to express in terms of an industry-defined vocabulary.

  1. find the curve class using the property type browser
    1.1. look for curve class by curve class attributes query

    1.2. find property type (property_type name == well_log_curve_class name)
      1.3. navigate property type hierarchy
      1.4. look for property type names matching the criteria name
      1.4. look for property type definitions matching the criteria description
  2. find the tool class
    2.1. short list, just eyeball it
  

• User has criteria for well log data which is expressed in terms of an industry-defined vocabulary. In order to search for data qualified by these criteria, she wishes to find the company-defined codes corresponding to these criteria.

pre-PWLS

The user must access multiple company dictionaries, view the data though distinct dictionary schemas, looking for descriptions which match his criteria.

The user is 'PWLS-aware'

The user finds an industry-standard term by which he can find a list of corresponding company codes. He uses pre-PWLS well log catalogs and search engines to find qualifying data.

The search engine is 'PWLS-enabled'

The user finds an industry-standard term by which the search engine finds the qualified data. Note that there is no requirement that well log data be reclassified to reflect the PWLS reference data.

The well log data are fully or substantially 'PWLS-enriched'

Data which were not previously classified or easily classifiable (e. g. computed curves with no direct-acquisition counterpart; digitized curves recorded prior to computerized logging systems, ...) are searchable. Note that there is no requirement that data with valid company classifications be reclassified to reflect the PWLS reference data.
